Tom's Downfall

Tom Harris MPI must confess, I'm rather torn between opinions on the sacking of Tom Harris as the Labour party's Social Media adviser or, as the tabloids were calling it, Twitter Tsar (horrible title, Twitter is not the be all and end all of social media, but that's another post for another time.)

On the one hand I think it was a harsh decision. That clip from Downfall has been used for ages to parody everything from A Game of Thrones to the Edinburgh Tram Fiasco; it was only a matter of time before an Alex Salmond version popped up. The clip is actually very funny - I bet the First Minister and his Deputy would secretly agree - and for me it says that Mr Harris actually does "get it" when it comes to online and social.

Lockerbie bomber Megrahi in a coma, is fallout for MacAskill just beginning?

“It was my decision and my decision alone.”
This will echo throughout the halls of Holyrood, and will be the corner stone of Kenny MacAskills political obituary.
This is of course the famous line from the live press conference two years ago, announcing the release from prison of Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, the only person to be convicted of killing 270 people in the 1988 Lockerbie bombing.

News of the World – the key to Tommy’s cell?

The News of the World is no more, 168 years of history has come to an end. The reputation of this once illustrious paper is now somewhere between the gutter and the gates of hell.

I remember something my grandpa had said about a particularly unpleasant individual he once knew: “Not even the hand of God could draw him up from the depths of the mire to degradation.” Seems fitting.

ELECTION 2011: Greens launch business manifesto

Scottish Green Party is launching a mini-manifesto for business with policies including support for community and publicly-owned renewables, boosting construction with a house-building programme, and plans to reinvigorate Scotland's town centres.

Annabel Goldie is the latest election casualty

Annabel Goldie, leader of the Scottish Conservatives, is the latest post-election scalp, announcing that she will stand down in the Autumn. She said that she was “disappointed” by her party’s performance in the election last week.

ELECTION 2011: Independence a threat to Scottish Economy

Labour today warned that the new SNP position on independence – that a referendum should be held in the second half of the next parliament – would lead to years of uncertainty and put off economic investment.
